Planning a Family Trip to Asia? Citi Points Just Got More Valuable, but Welcome Bonuses Got Harder to Earn

A few days ago, my friend Katie sent me a message. She's thinking about flying Japan Airlines to Japan for winter break 2027. Katie, before you go any further, there's something you need to know. Two Citi changes this fall land right on top of your plan. One helps you get to Japan. The other could quietly cost you a big welcome bonus if you don't know about it. You don't need to read ten articles about this. Here's what matters for your family.
If You Only Have 30 Seconds To Read
- Japan Airlines became a Citi ThankYou transfer partner on September 20, 2026. Annual-fee cards like Strata Premier and Strata Elite transfer 1:1.
- Japan Airlines' own miles give you options partner programs don't, including a backup when the cheapest seats are gone.
- Citi's welcome bonus rules for Strata credit cards got stricter in September. If you've ever held a specific Strata credit card, you likely can't earn that card's bonus again. The rule is about holding the card, not just earning its bonus.
- The good news: there's still no "family rule" across Strata, Strata Premier and Strata Elite. Having one doesn't block the others
- Citi points are getting more useful for Asia travel while big welcome bonuses are getting harder to earn. Now is the time to check your history with Citi.
Why Japan Airlines' Own Miles Matter
You can already book Japan Airlines flights with American Airlines AAdvantage miles. So why do Japan Airlines' own miles matter?
There are two reasons.
- You get first dibs. Japan Airlines members can book 360 days out. American Airlines members can't book until about 331 days out, almost a month later.
- You get a backup. Japan Airlines has something called "Award Ticket PLUS." When the base-price seats are gone, Japan Airlines members can still book for more miles. The price depends on how many seats are left. Partners only see the base-price seats, so when those are gone, partner miles hit a wall. Japan Airlines miles still have a door.
For a family of 4 to 11, or a family open to splitting across cabins, this backup plan is huge.

Why Citi Just Became A Big Deal For Japan Travel
Here's how the new Japan Airlines transfer works:
- Eligible annual-fee cards like Strata Premier and Strata Elite transfer at 1:1 ratio.
- No-annual-fee cards transfer at 1:0.7.
What that looks like in real numbers: Japan Airlines business class between North America and Japan starts at 55,000 miles one way. But please don't panic-transfer.
- Transfers can't be undone. Once points move to Japan Airlines, they're Japan Airlines miles forever.
- Japan Airlines miles generally last 36 months. Only move points if you're sure Japan Airlines is your plan.
The Part That Got Harder: Citi's New Welcome Bonus Rule For Strata Cards
This is the change that could quietly cost you. For years, Citi used a 48-month rule. If you waited 48 months after earning a card's bonus, you could earn it again. That's gone on the Strata cards. The new terms say the sign-up bonus isn't available if you currently have or previously had that specific card:
- Strata Premier: this includes the old Citi Premier
- Strata Elite: just Strata Elite
- Strata: this includes Strata Student
Two details people miss:
- It's about holding the card, not just earning the bonus. Even if you never got the bonus the first time, having had the card may be enough to block you.
- Downgrades count. If you moved your Strata Premier down to the no-fee Strata, you still "previously had" a Strata Premier.
We still need more real-life data points to know how far back Citi looks. For now, take the words at face value. One helpful thing: Citi has started showing a pop-up during the application if you're pre-qualified for the card but not eligible for the bonus. If you see it, stop and read it before you click continue.
This kind of "Once In A Life Time" Language isn't just Citi. Amex has had lifetime-style language for a long time, and Chase has similar wording on the Sapphire and Ink credit cards. "I'll just get it again in a few years" isn't a plan we can count on anymore.
The Good News: No Family Rule (Yet)
Quick definition, because this one confuses people. A "family rule" has nothing to do with your family. It's about a card family. With some Amex cards, getting the higher-tier card first (like Platinum) can block the welcome bonus on lower-tier ones later (like Gold or Green). So the order you apply in matters.
Citi doesn't do that right now.
- Have Strata Premier but never had Elite? You may still qualify for the Elite bonus.
- Have Elite but never had Premier? The Premier bonus may still be open to you.
As of today, the three cards are still separate. That's your window.
If you meet the credit requirements, the annual fee makes sense for you, and you can hit the minimum spend with what you already spend, it's worth putting the Strata cards you've never held into your plan.

Citi's Other Doors To Asia Pacific
Japan Airlines is the newest partner, but it's not the only reason Citi matters for Asia Pacific families.
- American Airlines AAdvantage (1:1): American Airlines miles can be used to book Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qatar and more. Compare booking Japan Airlines tickets through American Airlines against Japan Airlines' own program before you transfer. American Airlines and Starlux Airlines are also deepening their partnership. If American Airlines opens Starlux Airlines award bookings, Citi ThankYou Rewards becomes another path for Starlux Airlines flights, alongside Alaska Airlines and Etihad Airways.
AA miles are one of my favorite ways to book Etihad First Class Apartments and Business Class, especially for free cancellation and fewer mileage requirement.
One sweet spot that is Abu Dhabi to Singapore. 8 hours in Business Class for 40,000 AA miles! On my flight, a Singaporean-American family of four occupied half the First Class Apartment cabin. Now that’s family travel in style!
- EVA Air Infinity MileageLands (1:1): this is huge for families flying between North America and Taiwan. Capital One also transfers to EVA, but at 2:1.5 ratio, so 100,000 Capital One Miles becomes 75,000 EVA Air miles. With Citi, 100,000 points stays 100,000 miles. EVA Air also gives its own members more award seats than partner programs like Air Canada Aeroplan. That's not a guarantee for peak dates, but it's a real extra shot.
- Cathay Pacific Cathay (1:1): in my experience, Cathay long-haul between North America and Hong Kong rarely shows up for partners anymore. Cathay itself is the most reliable way in. Amex now transfers to Cathay at 5:4 ratio, so you've heard me say it before: build more than one points stream into Cathay. Their network across Asia, plus the lounges and the service, is too good to ignore.
Pictured here is Cathay Pacific’s A350 lie-flat Business Class cabin on the San Francisco–Hong Kong route.
The number of partners isn't the point. What matters is having partners that actually help your family finish the trip.
So What Should You Do? My Takeaways
- 1. Check your history with Citi before you apply for anything. Write down every Strata card (and old Citi Premier) you've ever held, open or closed. The ones you've never had are your opportunities.
- 2. Don't assume one Citi Strata card closes every door. There's no family rule right now, so Strata Premier and Strata Elite are separate.
- 3. If Japan is on your list, get Japan Airlines miles in the picture. They give you first dibs, plus the PLUS backup that partners can't see.
- 4. Transfer with a plan, not a panic. Transfers are one-way, and Japan Airlines miles last about 36 months.
- 5. Ask whether Citi ThankYou Rewards points have a real job in your family's travel. If you're heading to Japan, Taiwan or Hong Kong, the answer is probably yes.
Katie, hope to see you in the future in Japan. For everyone else: hit reply in this post and tell me which Strata cards you've held and when, so that you can know which welcome bonus is still yours, stop second-guessing the new rule, and know exactly what to do next.
